POVERTY: A condition in which a person lacks many of the basic necessities of life and the income needed to buy them. If these seems like a fuzzy concept, it is. Poverty is often a subjective notion, because the notion of basic necessities is also subjective. While everyone needs food for life, will a handful of wild grain do the trick or do you need an evening of fine dining? While there are no once-and-for-all, clear-cut answers, our good friends with the government have developed a so-called poverty line used as an official measure of who's in poverty and who's not. Most importantly, this poverty line is used to determine who's eligible to receive welfare and other forms of public assistance.

Lesson 8: Market Shocks | Unit 3: Single Shifts Page: 9 of 20

Topic: Less Demand <=PAGE BACK | PAGE NEXT=>

The six steps for a decrease in demand:
  • A determinant changes. The price of pecan pie, a substitute for hot fudge sundaes, declines.
  • A curve to shifts. The demand curve for hot fudge sundaes shifts leftward.
  • A shortage or a surplus occurs. The decrease in demand causes a surplus of hot fudge sundaes.
  • The price changes. The price of hot fudge sundaes goes down.
  • The quantities demanded and supplied change. The quantity supplied for hot fudge sundaes decreases while their quantity demand is increased.
  • The market imbalance is eliminated and equilibrium is restored. The surplus of hot fudge sundaes is eliminated. The price is lower and the quantity exchanged is less.

AMERICAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION

A formal organization of professional economists that promotes economic research, organizes annual meetings and conferences, and maintains a list of publications in several economics subjects. The American Economic Association (AEA) was originally organized by a small group interested in economics at a meeting in 1888 in Saratoga, New York. However, as interest in the subject grew, it officially incorporated in 1923. Although the AEA contained only a small number of members in the beginning, today the membership is approximately 18,000. In addition, about 4,600 libraries, institutions, and firms subscribe to the quarterly publications of the AEA.
