EQUITY: This has two, not totally unrelated, uses in our wonderful world of economics. The first is as one of the two micro goals (the other being efficiency) of a mixed economy. This use relates to the "fairness" of our income or wealth distributions. The second use of the term equity means ownership, especially the ownership of a business or corporation.

- A graph of total utility is achieved much like many other graphs in economics, by plotting a set of numbers.
- Let's set the stage.
- The axes at the right present the plotting area.
- The horizontal axis measures quantity, the number of hours spent at the beach. This ranges from 0 to 8.
- The vertical axis measures total utility, in utils, ranging from 0 to 40.
- The points plotted come from an infinite number of points that capture the relation between total utility and time at the beach.

ELASTIC The general relation between two variables in which relatively small changes in one variable (A) cause relatively large changes in another variable (B). Small changes in variable A cause relatively large changes in variable B or the percentage change in variable B is larger than the percentage change in variable A. This characterization of elasticity is most important for the price elasticity of demand and the price elasticity of supply. Elastic is one of two general elasticity relations between two variables. The other is inelastic.
