GIFFEN GOOD: A rare type of good seldom seen in the real world, in which a change in price causes quantity demanded to change in the same direction (in violation of the law of demand). In other words, an increase in the price of a Giffen good results in an increase in the quantity demanded. The existence of a Giffen good requires the existence of special circumstances. First, the good must be an inferior good. Second, the income effect triggered by a change in price must overwhelm the substitution effect. A Giffen good is most likely to result when the good is a significant share of the consumer's budget.

|
Page: 12 of 20
|
- The four basic changes in the market caused by increases or decrease in demand or supply.
- The six steps sequence to analyze any market shock: (1) a determinant changes, (2) a curve to shifts, (3) a shortage or a surplus occurs, (4) the price changes, (5) the quantities demanded and supplied change, and (6) the market imbalance is eliminated and equilibrium is restored.
- That an increase in demand causes an increase quantity and an increase in price.
- That a decrease in demand causes a decrease quantity and a decrease in price.
- That an increase in supply causes an increase quantity and a decrease in price.
- That a decrease in supply causes a decrease quantity and an increase in price.

MARGINALLY-ATTACHED WORKERS People who are willing and able to work, who have either held a job or searched for employment within the last year, but are not actively seeking employment. Discouraged workers, people who are willing and able to engage in productive activities, but due to their overwhelming lack of success believe that any effort to find a job will be fruitless so they have stopped seeking employment, fall within this broader category of marginally-attached workers. People can be marginally attached to the labor force for a variety of reasons, discouraged workers, in contrast, achieve their designation specifically because they believe search efforts are not worthwhile.
