APPRECIATION: A more or less permanent increase in value or price. "More or less permanent" doesn't include temporary, short-term jumps in price that are common in many markets. Appreciation is only those price increases that reflect greater consumer satisfaction and thus value. While all sorts of stuff can appreciate in value, some of the more common ones are real estate, works of art, corporate stock, and money. In particular, the appreciation of a nation's money is seen by an increase in the exchange rate caused by a growing, expanding, and healthy economy.

KITCHIN CYCLE: A cycle of economic activity lasting between 3 and 5 years that acquired the name of the first economist to study it, Joseph Kitchin. The Kitchin cycle is attributed to investment in inventories (especially for consumer goods). It is the one that is commonly at work when people are concerned with business-cycle contractions. This is also one of four separate cycles of macroeconomic activity that have been documented or hypothesized. The other three are Juglar cycle, Kuznets cycle, and Kondratieff cycle.

VOTING PROBLEMS

Voting is a key source of government inefficiency because it can fail to provided leaders with a valid indication of society's preferences. Part of the inefficiency rests with utility-maximizing decisions of the voters, who choose rational ignorance (not to be informed) and rational abstention (not to participate), both of which lead to voter apathy and influential special interest groups. Part of the inefficiency rests with the voting process, which results in importance of the median voter, inconsistency of the voting paradox, and logrolling (vote-trading ) among voters.
