KITCHIN CYCLE: A cycle of economic activity lasting between 3 and 5 years that acquired the name of the first economist to study it, Joseph Kitchin. The Kitchin cycle is attributed to investment in inventories (especially for consumer goods). It is the one that is commonly at work when people are concerned with business-cycle contractions. This is also one of four separate cycles of macroeconomic activity that have been documented or hypothesized. The other three are Juglar cycle, Kuznets cycle, and Kondratieff cycle.

SCARCE RESOURCE

A resource with an available quantity less than its desired use. Scarce, or economic, resources are also called factors of production and are generally classified as either labor, capital, land, or entrepreneurship. Scarce resources are the workers, equipment, raw materials, and organizers used to produce scarce goods. Like the more general society-wide condition of scarcity, a given resource falls into the scarce category because it has a limited availability in combination with greater (potentially unlimited) productive uses.

If I'm going to get a sundial, I should get the best, right? Northwest Queoldiola produces the finest, least expensive, and most technologically advanced sundials in the world. However, Mega-Mart Discount Warehouse Super Center has an ample supply of good old American-made sundials. They're a little more expensive and not quite as good, but they're made in the U. S. of A. by good old Americans. What a dilemma!
