HOSTILE TAKEOVER: In the world of mergers, the acquisition of one company by another against the wishes of the company being acquired. Also termed a hostile acquisition, this is accomplished by purchasing controlling interest in the stock of the acquired company, usually by offering to pay a price exceeding the current market price. A hostile takeover might be motivated to eliminate competition, to sell off the assets of the company for more that the takeover payment, or to temporarily inflate the price of the stock.

DOUBLE TAXATION: The payment of income taxes on corporate profits twice, once when it is received by a corporation as profit and second when it is received by shareholders as dividends. Double taxation has been thorn in the side of those who own a lot of corporate stock and thus receive a lot of stock dividends. It is also problem in standard corporations (C corporations) which as given rise to a newer legal type of firm, S corporation, which is not subject to double taxation.

AVERAGE REVENUE, PERFECT COMPETITION

The revenue received for selling a good per unit of output sold, found by dividing total revenue by the quantity of output. Average revenue often goes by a simpler and more widely used term... price. For a perfectly competitive firm average revenue is also equal to marginal revenue. Average revenue for a perfectly competitive firm is often depicted by a horizontal average revenue curve.
