HOTELLING'S RULE: The notion that efficiency and competitive market forces will lead to an increase of scarcity rent of a finite, exhaustible resource that is equal to the interest rate. The logic behind Hotelling's Rule is that as a finite fossil fuel is depleted, less is available in the future, causing scarcity rent, and thus the resource price, to increase. An increase in the resource price reduces the quantity demanded and conserves more for future consumption. When finite, exhaustible resource markets are competitive, this process generates an efficient allocation over time.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

The proportion of the civilian labor force 16 years or older that is actively seeking employment, but is unemployed and not engaged in the production of goods and services. The unemployment rate is estimated and reported monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. It is used not only as the prime measure of labor unemployment in the economy, but also as a key indicator of business-cycle instability. In principle, the unemployment rate measures the proportion of the labor that is willing and able to work, but not employed. In practice, the official unemployment rate is simply the ratio of total unemployment to the total civilian labor force, in percentage terms.

Two blocks directly south of the Mega-Mart Discount Emporium we'll find that Natural Ned's Nursery and Garden Center is having a grand opening celebration. I'd like to saunter over to check out their sundials -- a valuable, and long sought after acquisition for my backyard garden. In fact, Natural Ned's Nursery and Garden Center has a new shipment of sundials imported from the sundial capital of the world -- the Republic of Northwest Queoldiola. If I'm going to get a sundial, I should get the best, right? Northwest Queoldiola produces the finest, least expensive, and most technologically advanced sundials in the world. However, Mega-Mart Discount Warehouse Super Center has an ample supply of good old American-made sundials. They're a little more expensive and not quite as good, but they're made in the U. S. of A. by good old Americans. What a dilemma!
