SELLERS' EXPECTATIONS: One of the five supply determinants assumed constant when a supply curve is constructed, and that shift the supply curve when they change. The other four are resource prices, technology, other prices, and number of sellers. If sellers expect the future price will be greater, then they're likely to sell less today, to take advantage of the higher future price. Alternatively, if sellers expect a lower future price, then they're likely to sell more today, hoping to avoid the lower price. A higher future price induces an decrease in supply and a lower future price induces a increase in supply.

THIRD-DEGREE PRICE DISCRIMINATION

A form of price discrimination in which a seller charges different prices to groups that are differentiated by an easily identifiable characteristic, such as location, age, sex, or ethnic group. This is the most common type of price discrimination. This is one of three price discrimination degrees. The others are first-degree price discrimination and second-degree price discrimination.

The Depths Of DEPRESSION

In the discussion of recession we see that one of the problems confronting both pedestrians and the economy is stepping in an occasional pothole. These potholes are usually small and do little damage. Every now and then, however, our economy falls face first into one humdinger of pothole that's big enough to swallow the better part of a marching band. Rather than a mere recessionary pothole, these are best thought of as depressionary canyons. The Great Depression of the 1930s was the most memorable depressionary canyon on record for the good old U. S. of A. The question we need to ponder over the next few pages is: Are there any more depressionary canyons like the 1930s lurking along the economic pavement?
