WANTS AND NEEDS: These are the unfulfilled desires that motivate human behavior and that when satisfied improve human well-being. They include both physiological or biological requirements for maintaining life (needs) and the psychological desires which make life more enjoyable (wants). However, when push comes to shove, and the nitty gets down to the gritty, it matters very little to markets if people need goods or want goods, so long as they are motivated to buy the goods to satisfy wants and needs.

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE INDEX: A measure of consumer attitudes, preferences, and expectations concerning the state of the economy and business cycle conditions that is compiled each month by The Conference Board. The Conference Board is also responsible for compiling the leading, coincident, and lagging economic indicators. The Consumer Confidence Index is one of two primary measures of consumer attitudes. The other is the Index of Consumer Sentiment developed by the University of Michigan.

FEDERAL FUNDS RATE

The interest rate charged by one commercial bank or depository institution for lending Federal Reserve deposits to another commercial bank or depository institution. This is the interest rate determined in the Federal funds market. The Federal funds rate is a key interest rate for both the banking system and the macroeconomy. It is often targeted by monetary policy and is a benchmark used to determine other interest rates in the economy.
